Lately, like a lot of people, I've been finding myself seeking comfort and hope in a world that seems to be racing toward manmade obliteration. This project is about traveling through the natural world, that seems diametrically opposed to the problems created by man yet directly affected by them, and is used as a metaphor for that search for comfort and hope. The images were photographed deep in the woods where sunlight breaks through, creating a feeling of either moving toward something or having my path blocked. I use toy cameras for photographing these scenes and made the prints using the gumoil process. This adds an even darker appearance to the imagery that I feel is reminiscent of film noir or day for night cinematography. The result is a journey through the woods that is frequently unsettling, confusing, and difficult to navigate but punctuated by moments of peace and a sense of promise of something brighter or better. The moments of peace unexpectedly tend to appear in the darkest images.
